Although there are specialist events for experienced dancers of particular dance styles, a barn dance is normally a fun and light-hearted event for everyone to enjoy, regardless of age or ability. Circle dances, longways sets, squares and even a waltz for couples — there can be plenty of variety, and the opportunity to meet a new partner each time through a dance. The caller will explain all the moves fully, working with a radio microphone to help the dancers on the dance floor.

We always have live music, the Amycrofters being the resident band. We have guest bands several times a month. Our aim is to have fun, make friends, get a little exercise, and enjoy our dancing. If you have a partner or friend who cannot dance, they can still come and socialise and enjoy the music while you dance.

A day of Irish Set Dancing. Workshops run from 10.30am to 16.30pm, followed by a céilí in the evening from 8.00pm to 11.30pm. Workshops are to CDs; the céilí features live music by Pendragon.

Irish Set Dancing is a great way of socialising and keeping fit at the same time. It is a social form of dance where each dance is in the form of a square, danced with four couples. You don’t need to bring a partner as many come just by themselves and pair up or swap with other dancers. We dance to Irish music, usualy to CDs but occasionally to live music. We welcome all levels of dancers from beginners to the more experienced. We also have a tea/coffee break as we all like to have a chat and get to know each other better.

The club meets most Monday evenings. Club nights are normally at the Bader Hall of King Edward School, Kings Hill Road, Lichfield WS14 9DE, except during school holidays, when the club normally uses St Chad’s Church Hall, The Leasowe WS13 7HD. New members are always welcome, including beginners.

Oxfolk Ceilidhs

A ceilidh is an evening of high-energy dancing, similar to barn dancing or country dancing. The music is always live and loud and dancing is often fast and furious. Oxfolk plays host to many of the best ceilidh bands on the English folk scene and there will always be an excellent caller to guide you through the dances. The dances are usually for sets of couple, rather than for couples alone, and the dances are always clearly explained and walked through before the music starts playing. If you’ve never done ceilidh dancing, this is a brilliant way to start because you really can pick it up as you go along. Wear some comfortable shoes or trainers, though – you’ll need them!

Morris dancing?? You bet! University of Bristol’s very own Rag Morris is in its 27th year - free-spirited, energetic, colourful, comic, fun, rarely normal. Dedicated to keeping tradition alive and up-to-date. Come and wear brilliantly coloured rag shirts, hats and bells. Dance with sticks, hankies, bare hands, and occasionally plastic chickens, to the music of accordions, melodeons, whistles, fiddles, drums, and meet our trusty hobby-horse, Rags. We’ll teach you all you need to know and more besides!

The emphasis is more on having fun than getting it right or ‘historically correct’, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before. The caller walks through every dance before it starts then prompts during the dance, you can’t go wrong!

We’re lucky to be supported by a number of excellent local bands. We also like to see ourselves as a stepping stone for up and coming young bands and callers who have often emerged from local sessions or dance teams, creating an exiting and unique atmosphere.
