Dance

A ceilidh is an evening of high-energy dancing, similar to barn dancing or country dancing. The music is always live and loud and dancing is often fast and furious. Oxfolk plays host to many of the best ceilidh bands on the English folk scene and there will always be an excellent caller to guide you through the dances. The dances are usually for sets of couple, rather than for couples alone, and the dances are always clearly explained and walked through before the music starts playing. If you’ve never done ceilidh dancing, this is a brilliant way to start because you really can pick it up as you go along. Wear some comfortable shoes or trainers, though – you’ll need them! ...

Morris dancing?? You bet! University of Bristol’s very own Rag Morris is in its 27th year - free-spirited, energetic, colourful, comic, fun, rarely normal. Dedicated to keeping tradition alive and up-to-date. Come and wear brilliantly coloured rag shirts, hats and bells. Dance with sticks, hankies, bare hands, and occasionally plastic chickens, to the music of accordions, melodeons, whistles, fiddles, drums, and meet our trusty hobby-horse, Rags. We’ll teach you all you need to know and more besides! ...

The club meets September to April and we dance a selection of circles, squares and longways, mainly English but also some Scottish and New England contras. Very friendly club and everyone very welcome with or without a partner.

Sing, dance and play.

Unicorn Ceilidhs are public dances with a good live band and caller. Couples, singles and groups are all welcome. There’s a proper sprung dance floor, a well-stocked Real Ale bar, tables to sit at - and a great atmosphere! Or ring Alan on the number below (work hours) for a chat.

The emphasis is more on having fun than getting it right or ‘historically correct’, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve never done it before. The caller walks through every dance before it starts then prompts during the dance, you can’t go wrong! We’re lucky to be supported by a number of excellent local bands. We also like to see ourselves as a stepping stone for up and coming young bands and callers who have often emerged from local sessions or dance teams, creating an exiting and unique atmosphere. ...
