Boston Folk Club has been meeting in the town for over 30 years, in a variety of venues including the Golden Lion, Blackfriars, the Pineapple Club and the Copper Kettle. I suppose this counts as American folk music, sort of. ? Friends of American Old-Time Music and Dance (FOAOTMAD for short!) was founded in 1993 with the aim of furthering the promotion and performance of traditional old-time music and dance in the UK. We organise regular music camps, residential workshops, dance parties and support for many other formal and informal old-time events.
Gainsborough is a small market town in north west Lincolnshire, England. The folk club is small but extremely enthusiastic and friendly.
These are lively evenings of traditional music, mainly English polkas, jigs, reels, hornpipes and waltzes, played on acoustic-only instruments, typically fiddles, melodeons, guitars, flutes, bodhrans and the odd hammered dulcimer and double bass. Besides English tunes, a few Irish, American, Scots, French-Canadian, French and Cajun tunes may also feature from time to time. There is usually no singing; that happens in the pub on a different night.
Beaumont Manor is adjacent to City Hall Car Park. The Lounge Bar is on the ground floor, with access via the rear doorway. A selection of hot meals and snacks is available at the fully licensed bar. The club is ‘all acoustic’. A raffle is held at half-time. Performers pay £1.00; non-performers pay £2.00.
The annual Lincoln Folk Festival, which has run for 25 years in the city of Lincoln, UK, is no more. Instead, regular concerts are held throughout the year, with a ‘Grand Concert’ (this is the ‘plus one’).
